Re: Confidential Application for Attorney—Independent Contractor Position
Dear Mr. Gooden:
It is with considerable interest that I enclose my resume and writing samples for the Independent Contractor Attorney position. I believe my resume illustrates that I am well qualified for this position. I not only currently teach legal methods and analysis at Southwestern School of Law but also have practiced for a number of years at a major law firm. One of the enclosed writing samples is an agreement that I prepared to negotiate the details of my client’s performance. While in private practice, I drafted numerous contracts relating to employee benefit matters.
As a clinical instructor at Southwestern, I teach legal methods and analysis to first year students, critique and edit students’ written work as well as organize and supervise mock oral arguments and trials. I also teach other legal skills including statutory interpretation, fact development, interviewing and client counseling. I am highly proficient in Westlaw, as that is the key research tool used in my research curriculum. In addition to my teaching duties, I supervise several teaching assistants and student externs working in federal and state criminal law divisions.
Prior to joining the faculty at Southwestern, I practiced in the private sector for a number of years. I was an associate with the law firm of Fenton Reed LLP. I practiced in the Corporate Tax/ERISA section. As an associate at Fenton Reed, I drafted employment, change in control and stock option agreements, and benefit and retirement plans, participated in major corporate transactions, and prepared numerous memoranda concerning complex federal tax and ERISA issues.
In addition to my teaching and private practice experience, I served as a federal law clerk for the Honorable Vanessa D. Gilmore for two years. As a law clerk, I researched and drafted memoranda and orders for dispositive motions in civil cases, for prisoner civil rights litigation and federal and state habeas corpus petitions.
I sincerely appreciate your review of my confidential application and welcome the opportunity to meet with you personally to discuss the contributions that I could make to your office. Given the flexibility afforded by my teaching schedule, this part-time (work from home position) would be a perfect match.
Thank you for your consideration,
Barbara Fonsworth, Esq.
